Photography in Travel Magazines
I often used to think that travel literature served only one person: to shows us the fabulous images of those destinations we yearned after. The words, I used to think, were nothing but filler, but noise that fit around the pretty pictures. It wasn’t until I started reading travel books and a new travel magazine that I began to understand that words can often take us deeper than photographs themselves, that they can actually take us into the mind of the writer and get a real sense of the experience or the adventure. That’s why now, when I read travel literature, I always pay attention to the words first. I always ask the writer, subconsciously, how did you feel writing this and why did you choose to put this out in the world? For me that aspect of reading about travel is far more interesting than looking at the beautiful photos.
